Homemade Refried Beans Recipe

Refried Beans 1

We love making homemade bean burritos.  They are favorites of Bryan and the kiddos.   They are super frugal to make and pack a punch of fiber and nutrients, whats not to love?

It is easy on days that I am home all day to cook up a large batch of homemade pinto beans and then use those to make our own homemade refried beans.  We can control everything that goes into them and they are not full of preservatives.

I make up a double or triple batch to freeze for later, then when I need a quick meal, simple thaw and use!

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups of cooked pinto beans
  • 1/2-3/4 teaspoon of salt to taste
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cumin

Directions

I start mine with homemade beans that I have cooked with onions and garlic.   If you are using canned beans then add in 1 teaspoon of garlic and 1 teaspoon of dried onion powder.  Ladle your beans into your food processor or blender with the liquids.  Add in your spices to taste.  Pulse until you reach a semi-smooth consistency.

You can either spoon into jars to can or freeze.  If you are freezing your beans, be sure to leave a 3/4″ allowance at the top of the jar for expansion.

  1. That is awesome!! My husband loves refried beans, but hates how much fat the store purchased ones have. And how many unhealthy ingredients they have. I never knew how to make them. So this is fantastic!

    1. Mine are going right now! My kids actually love beans but when I make bean burritos with cheese you would have thought I handed them a steak 🙂 I hope your kids enjoy them!

  2. Great! I was just looking for a recipe for refried beans this past weekend. Glad to find this one. I’m going to try it! Thanks, Amanda

    1. Happy you found us! This recipe is so, simple but one that has been a life saver for us when time creeps up in the afternoon and I don’t have anything out for dinner!
