All Terrain an Eco-Friendly Outdoors Solution

Herbal Armor

My children love being outdoors, whether it be 100 degrees or 30 degrees, they love it!  While I don’t exactly enjoy the intense heat we have had this summer, I also enjoy being outside working in my garden and playing with the kids.  I can’t wait for the weather to start cooling down to spend more time outdoors!

For anyone that knows me well, they know that during the summer time my legs stay covered in red bites all summer long.  I do not know exactly what it is that attracts bugs to me, but I am one of the ones in the crowd that they seem to flock to.  So I was extremely excited to try All Terrain’s Kids Herbal Armor Natural Insect and Bug Repellent.

My problem is truly remembering to use it!  I received the Herbal Armor right before we left for Florida and truly wished I had taken it with me.  Although I didn’t get many bites, one evening while I was sitting with the children with our legs over hanging into Aunt Pam’s beautiful pond, I truly wish I had taken it with me!  That evening the bugs feasted on me.

What Makes Kids Herbal Armor Different?

Simply put, the ingredients make it different!  Or maybe better said, the lack of.  This natural solution is DEET-free!

According to Wikipedia “DEET has been found to inhibit the activity of a central nervous systemenzyme, acetylcholinesterase, in both insects and mammals.  DEET is commonly used in combination with insecticides and has the capacity to strengthen the toxicity of carbamates, a class of insecticides known to block acetylcholinesterase. These findings bring evidence that, besides having known toxic effects on the olfactory system, DEET also acts on the brain of insects, and that its toxicity is strengthened in combination with other insecticides.”

Simply put DEET is toxic.  It has caused severe reactions in humans.  Actually here is how the company of All Terrain began:

All Terrain’s mission is to help people live more active, healthier lives.  The company originated when a climber was hiking in Costa Rica and a bottle of DEET-based insect repellent he was carrying leaked.  It ate through his backpack and melted the keys on a calculator he was carrying to figure out the exchange rate.  After that experience, he came home, researched and developed the natural, yet effective, Herbal Armor™ Insect Repellent.

While some companies still use DEET, it is not a chemical I want to put on my body or that of my children.  You will find the following ingredients in the Herbal Armor:  Soybean Oil, Citronella Oil, Peppermint Oil, Cedar Oil, Lemongrass Oil, Geranium Oil, Water, Glyceryl Stearate, Beeswax, Vegetable Glycerin, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate and Citric Acid.

I was very pleased with the results.  They suggest applying ever 2-3 hours and I have found with myself I need to re-apply it every 2 hours but I am so happy that it helps prevent so many insects from feasting on me.

The AquaSport Braod Spectrum SPF 30 Lotion was rated the top sunscreen in the June 2012 Consumer Report Sunscreen report.   The All Terrain sunscreens also scored high in the June Sunscreen report issued by the Environmental Working Group.  The EWG rates products according to the toxicity levels of the ingredients in products and how they  affect children or the environment.

The AquaSport is oxybenzone-free and fragrance-free.  It offers full-spectrum protection from UVA  and UVB rays.  With the active ingredient being zinc oxide, it is natural, non-whitening and non-greasy. It is water and sweat resistant and is proven to be effective after 80 minutes in water.

We were headed out into a day that we thought would be full of sun (which it proved to be both sunny and rainy, after all we are talking about Florida).  It isn’t often that Hubby offers to pose, but he was being silly for the kids while we waited for the bus to the Magic Kingdom and I took advantage of it!  Here he is applying his sunscreen for the morning before we headed out.  We loved that is was not greasy!  I also loved that is didn’t add any extra whiteness to my already white skin!  More important;y, I was not worried that using the AquaSport would harm us!

This looks great. We just went without bug spray all summer because I knew most things on the shelves are full of nasty stuff. And I was pretty miserable as a result! Definitely checking this out for next year.
