Eating Locally: What is in Season Locally for Me?

The weather the past several days have been a reminder that Summer is fleeing and we are now in those cool Autumn days as well as starting to see beautiful Autumn colors (Yeah!).  As with Summer fleeing so does Summer produce.  Nowadays, because of hot houses and produce flown in from half-way around the world we are able to have almost any type of produce no matter when it is actually in season locally.

To help support our local farmers and to cut down on fuel costs and emissions due to transportation, this Eat Well Guide makes it super easy to find out what is in season locally broken down by month for each state!   (Canada is listed also)  No matter where you live you can find out what is in season for you!  Also when you eat in season you are providing your family with the freshest food.

For me, the month of October brings: Apples, Asian Pears, Broccoli, Cabbage, Greens, Herbs, Muscadines, Pumpkins, Summer squash, Sweet Potatoes , Tomatoes, and Watermelon.

This is a great resource to use to help purchase seasonal items that are grown locally.  Speak with your local farmers to find out exactly when to expect their produce to be available.
