I am always looking for new ways to teach my children about plants, animals, insects and the environment. I haven’t ever personally tried to raise insects but I thought it would be a great way to teach my children about their life-cycle and how quickly something can change. I was so excited to find Insect Lore! They have a wide variety of living kits from butterflies, to ants, lady bugs, praying mantis, frogs, worms, and more insects. After a little thought (actually none at all) with which we wanted to start with we went for the butterflies!
This is what came, a box that contained our live caterpillars. We received 5 healthy and happy little guys.
Addie was so excited when ours climbed to the top and attached themselves to the lid. Now was time to move them into their new home.
We woke up only three days later to find this little guy, actually all five butterflies flying around! We decided after two days that we would let them spend their lives outside and enjoy the fresh air.
Austin was so excited that one landed on his leg multiple times before making its way off. We truly enjoyed the experience and we all learned so much. We will definately be doing this again! Maybe next time we will try out another insect (except spiders).
