Recipes: Homemade Honey Pizza Dough

I have to say I love the smell of pizza dough!  My 3 year old loves to eat the dough just as my Mother always did!  Here is my favorite recipe for Homemade Pizza Dough!  It makes enough for three pizza crusts.
5 Cups White Whole Wheat Flour
3 Teaspoons of White Whole Wheat Flour or Cornmeal
1 1/4 Cup of Warm Water
2 1/4 Teaspoons of Yeast (1 Packet if you prefer)
Pinch of Salt
3 Tablespoon of Honey
Olive Oil
First place your warm water in a glass bowl (metal really should not be used as it inhibits the growth of the yeast).  Then add your yeast and honey.  Stir gently and let it sit about 10 minutes.  Once the yeast becomes active it will start to slightly bubble and look frothy. 

Next add the flour and salt to your yeast.  Stir gently with the first few cups and then start to knead with your hands.  Knead the dough until you have a smooth dough, not too sticky and not too dry.  If your dough is still sticky, add another tablespoon of flour.  If your dough is too dry add another tablespoon of water.  Continue until you are happy with your dough. (You can use a clean bowl for this if you prefer but I have learned it works pretty much the same to use the same bowl and saves a dish).

Next drizzle your dough ball with olive oil, rub with your hand turning the ball to coat all sides.  Cover and let the dough rise about 30-40 minutes depending on the temperature of your home.  (During the winter time this can take up to 2 hours or more).

This dough has risen and doesn’t look very pretty so I kneaded it slightly more.  Next I sprinkle my pan with a teaspoon of flour or cornmeal to prevent my crust from sticking while I roll it out.  Once again I drizzle a small amount of olive oil on the crust and using my hand I rub the entire crust to spread the oil olive.  (This makes such a huge difference, give it a try)!

Add your sauce and favorite toppings and bake at 350 degrees 18-20 minutes.  The crust will not be very dark in color due to adding the olive oil but it will be done and is so delicious!  I prefer thin crust and find that many are way too hard.  I don’t like doughy crusts either and this one is just right! 


My pizza’s may not win a beauty contest as my children love to help make them, but they are delicious!  This night we made a Barbecue Chicken Pizza and a Cheese Pizza.  For the third pizza we made special individual pizza’s for the kids and I will share that later this week.  Now throw together a salad with whatever veggies you have on hand & you have a great dinner!
