Rwanda Path to Peace: A Gift that Gives Back

When I received this basket, as soon as I removed it from the box I knew it was unique!  It is beautiful of course but represents so much more.  It is a hand-woven basket from a woman who is participating in the Rwanda’s Path to Peace program.   Let me explain a little bit about the program and what it does for the weavers behind the baskets.

In the aftermath of the genocide that shook Rwanda in the 1990’s a great amount of the population left was women, about 70%.  In 2002 Noeleen Heyzer, , visited Rwanda and was touched by the beauty of the traditional woven baskets.  She was affected so much that she reached out to American businesswoman,  Willa Shalit in hopes of developing a market for Rwandan basketwork. Willa began working with weavers in Rwanda and partners America and in three short years later, the Rwanda Path to Peace project in partnership with Macy’s was born.

You are Purchasing More than Just a Bowl!

You see these are  truly unique hand-made bowls but they also provide real, sustainable income to rural women who had never before earned money in their lives.  It allows these women that hand-craft these baskets to feed and educate their children.  They give each weaver the ability to seek healthcare and have a sense of leadership in her community.

Today, the Path to Peace project is larger than ever before.  Now employing thousands of weavers and having an impact on tens of thousands of lives.  The impact of the income-generating work the project creates is vital for the communities in which these weavers live.  The Path the Peace program focuses on trade, not actual aid.  It puts the power of opportunity into the hands of the women of Rwanda to benefit themselves, providing not only income but also the chance to take an active role in the shaping of their future.

Features of the Rwanda Path to Peace handcrafted bowls:

  • Numbered Certificate of Authenticity
  • Naturally dyed coil-sewn raffia
  • Hand-woven in Rwanda
  • 12″ diameter
  • Because each bowl is a unique work of art, variations in size and color will occur
  • Artisans receive half the wholesale price for each item sold

These beautiful basket are hand-woven using the same techniques and natural, renewable plant resources that Rwanda women have used for centuries.  They harvest responsibly grown sisal leaves that are split and peeled to harvest the inner fibers.  These are then colored using natural dyes and then dried in the sun.  The weavers change needles threaded with different colors to create the complex and colorful patterns.  A 12-inch bowl will consist of several thousand tiny stitches that have all been done by hand.  Isn’t that amazing!

  1. I love hearing about and supporting programs like this. Kudos to Macy’s for carrying this line! The bowl is beautiful, but you’re right it is so much more than that.

    1. They also carry a beautiful jewelry line named the Heart of Haiti where the same principle applies. I love that they are having a helping hand in so many lives!
