While I realize hummus is not for everyone, it is in our family. I can eat it by the cup and the kids, they love hummus! I am not sure if it is the creamy texture or the tangy flavor but we are hooked. I never feel bad about how much hummus they eat since it is a healthy protein.
You can usually always find hummus in my fridge. I use to purchase hummus weekly but why would you spend $4 on a tube when you can make it for $1 or less! You need just a few simple ingredients and you can get started to making your own.
Simple Garlic Hummus Recipe
Ingredients
- 1-2 garlic cloves
- 2 tablespoons of tahini
- 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
- 1/2-1 teaspoons of salt
- 1/3 cup of olive oil
- 1 1/2 cups of cooked chickpeas (garbanzo beans) or 15-ounce can
Directions
1. Add all the ingredient with the exception of the olive oil into a food processor. Pulse until just combined. It will look a bit like creamed corn.
2. Add the olive oil and pulse until it is creamy and smooth.
3. Refrigerate for up to a week (if you have any leftovers!)
Side Notes: You can easily use dried chickpeas that you cook yourself to save money and avoid the extra junk that can come along with canned goods. If you are only making one batch then cook 3/4 cup of dried chickpeas. If you have never used tahini, it is a paste made from sesame seeds. You can find it at most grocery stores or online.

I’m going to have to try this. I’ve only had hummus twice before. The first time it was gritty and the texture completely turned me off from it. A friend encouraged me to give it another try at a Middle Eastern Restaurant and it was so good that I decided that my first experience with it was just unfortunate 😉
