Simple Homemade Salsa Recipe

#cookclassico #CbiasI have to admit, while I am not a huge football fan but I do really enjoy getting together with friends and family for a good party, to munch and catch up no matter what the occasion.  Hubby of course really enjoys watching all the games, especially the Big Game.  He doesn’t require a big to-do but does love to have good food, what man doesn’t?

While the Big Game for us this year didn’t quite turn out as we had planned due to a sick kiddo with a sour stomach, we did have a great time together as a family.   Since we were just coming off being away, I had planned easy things I could have on hand when we came home. Truthfully, after the week we had, relaxing with my family, building Legos and watching the Big Game was such an awesome way to end the week.

#CookClassico #CbiasWhile trying to keep our evening simple and healthy, for us it was going to be a Mexican themed night with beef tacos, bean burritos, spanish rice, guacamole, homemade salsa and all the trimmings. (And a yummy football cake to celebrate the Big Game!)

Being the middle of winter, fresh tomatoes with good flavor and texture are hard to find.  I decided to try out our homemade salsa with canned tomatoes.  I had picked up Classico Crushed tomatoes from our local Walmart store.  I have only seen them recently, and love that they are 100% all-natural, always packed fresh with no preservatives.  So even though not fresh per say, these were the very choice for this time of year!

I use a lot of tomatoes in various recipes and consider them to be a pantry staple.  I have tried several recipes in the past for fresh salsa and this recipe is by far my favorite so far.  With amazingly fresh taste and texture they were a perfect choice to use for our homemade salsa on the Big Day.

#CookClassico #CbiasThis is such an easy recipe and so flavorful.  If your family prefers a more spicy flare, then you can add a little more pepper.  That is the awesome thing about making homemade salsa, you can tailor it to your tastes by simply adding more or less of something.

Simple Homemade Salsa Recipe

  • 1 – 28 oz can Heinz Classico Crushed Tomatoes
  • 1/4 cup onion, very finely diced
  • 1/2 Jalapeño pepper, very finely diced
  • 4 Tbsp. fresh cilantro, chopped
  • The Juice of a 1/2 of a Lemon
  • 1 tsp. sea salt

Drain the juice from your can tomatoes.  Either finely dice and chop all of your ingredients or if your family is like mine and doesn’t care for chunky salsa so I add the onion and pepper into my food processor and pulse it a few times until you are happy with the results.  Now add in your tomatoes and remaining ingredients and pulse a few more times to combine.

Helpful Hints:

  • You can always add more if you would like more heat, salt or other spices but you can not lessen it unless you make another batch.  Start small with spices and salts and add more as desired.
  • Try adding 2-3 tablespoons of sour cream or soften cream cheese to your salsa to turn it into a creamy delicious treat!

How can you go wrong with anything that includes salsa?  With what we had on our spread, some were able to have tacos, others bean burritos or taco salads.  No matter what dish was selected, salsa was added to each dish.  The salsa was superb!  I now have an alternative to jarred salsa in the winter time when the tomatoes are not in season.  On the next occasion where you need salsa for a dish be sure to give this recipe a try!

    1. I will be sharing the cake and frosting recipe in a bit. I am late but the recipe is just a cake that I cut down to the football shape. And I am partial to the stoneware with handles. I am looking on locating some more that are a little more eco-friendly 🙂

    1. Thanks Kelsey, it was yummy and we all really enjoyed being home 🙂 The salsa is so easy but soooo good, you should give it a try!
