Turn a Man’s Neck Tie into an Up-Cycled Child’s Bow Tie

My little man has been asking for a bow tie for months.  It was on my 2012 to-do list and I am happy to report I can cross that one off my list!  Of course it was my first one and I will make a few adjustments with the second one.   I think it came out rather well, taking into consideration that I made it from a man’s necktie.

We found this tie at a Humane Society thrift store and Austin loved it!  Why?  My kids LOVE Nemo, fish, just animals in general-they love them!  He has carried this tie around for the last two weeks asking me to make him a bow tie like his cousin wears.  I really wanted to but finding the time to get it done was another issue.  So tonight, after both children were asleep, I was waiting on a batch of corn processing in my pressure canner, I decided I would give it a go and make my son so happy to wake to find him a Nemo bow tie!

I used strictly the materials in the tie, except for thread of course and although I would like it to be slightly larger, it turned out very nicely.  Here is a photo of the pieces I cut from the tie.  I even used the inside lining of the tie for my bow tie as well.  This was done at midnight so it took me a little longer than it would maybe if I could truly think straight, but it was took me about 45 minutes.  I still need to add the velcro or snaps on the neck-band but wanted to wait until I was able to measure it on Austin for placement.

Although I am really excited to share with you how to make your little man a bow tie, I am going to tweak it and then share it in an upcoming post with some amazing fabric from my new Sponsor, Honey Be Good.  Be sure to check back in a couple of weeks for a step by step tutorial.

  1. I love it! I can’t wait to see the full tutorial. My husband doesn’t wear ties anymore so we have these laying around and I would just LOVE to see my little man in a bow tie. 🙂

  2. So great! I love that.
Now looking for a post about the pressure canning because I REALLY want to learn how to can veggies!

    1. Hi Dede-I actually will have a canning/preserving series starting at the end of the month running through August or mid-September. I share some how-to posts and then a few not so great video how-tos of pressure canning so it will be soon!
