When you think of visiting the South, the first place that comes to mind maybe isn’t Jackson, Mississppi, but maybe it should be and this Ultimate Guide to Jackson Mississippi will show you why. The city of Jackson prides itself on being an affordable yet exciting up-and-coming city that promotes a rich culture and strong sense of diversity. Brown’s Fine Art Gallery, Fischer Galleries and the Municipal Art Galleries are just a few places to check out the art firsthand. The Municipal Art Gallery was originally built in 1860’s and is one of the oldest surviving historical structures in Jackson. It has become a cultural focal point for local artists and attracts 20,000 visitors to the downtown area every year.
Jackson found itself as the center of attention during the Civil War. It was actually burned down three times during the war with only chimneys remaining. Throughout the city are found Mississippi Freedom Trail Markers. You can learn how the shared past of Mississippi influences the future of all together at the Museum of Mississippi History.
The COFO Civil Rights Education Center and Mississippi Civil Rights Museum both share the story of the states difficult past but how the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi has come to where we are today.
Family Fun + Museums
There is no shortage of fun places to take the family. We always love searching out the places the children can have fun and learn or be engaged also. The Mississippi Children’s Museum with it’s larger than life Scrabble set and interactive exhibits looks like it fits the bill! The Mississippi Museum of Natural Science also looks like an amazing place to visit. My kids would love to see the two-headed snake on exhibit.
You can even save a bundle by purchasing a LeFleur Museum District pass. The one pass gives you access to four amazing places: Mississippi Children’s Museum, Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum and the Mississippi Agriculture & Forestry Museum, all for under $20.
Get in Touch with Nature
Enjoy taking in the natural beauty at LeFleur Bluff’s State Park. Float down the Pearl River, camp or walk down the nature trails. Play a round of golf or enjoy disc golf. Go fishing at Mayes Lake for bass, bream, catfish and crappie.
If you enjoy taking a walk on the wild side, you can visit the Jackson Zoological Park. You can see local native animals, plus plenty of exotic animals, including the beautiful Sumatran tigers Eko and his mom, Sari. Or take a visit to Mynelle Gardens to see the gardens unfold during each season.
If your family likes to explore things out of this world, the Russell C. Davis Planetarium/Ronald E. McNair Space Theater would be the perfect spot. The Planetarium is home to a 60-foot diameter projection dome where scenes of stars, planets and other celestial objects appear that simulate the motions of the heavens.
Who doesn’t worry about the food while on vacation? I certainly do. Getting a break from preparing and cooking is one of my favorite things about vacation. There is no shortage of amazing food to be found in Jackson.
Jackson is where the influence of Grandmother’s cooking and sacred recipes meet cooking techniques learned in world-class culinary schools. You will find phenomenal chefs at many of the Mom and Pop restaurants that are community staples.
