Make Unique Gift Wrapping with Watercolor M&M Painting

As a member of the Collective Bias®  Social Fabric® Community I was compensated & challenged to get crafty with M&Ms.

About two weeks ago I shared with you just how much “the boys” of the family love gaming.  While they don’t jump to purchase every new game, they do totally love racing, so I purchased the new Forza 5 game that was recently released.  Awesome graphics and racing, what gamer wouldn’t love to receive the new Forza 5 Motorsport as a gift?

The Forza 5 Motorsport game wasn’t the only thing I picked up.  Since you can be rewarded with a $10 eGift card when you purchase a Forza 5 game and M&Ms, they were added to my list!  You can see the full details of the Buy, Snap, Redeem promotion here.

Of course when most people think of M&Ms, they think of eating them but… I had a different plan!  We were going to use them in a unique way for our gift wrapping!  I love trying to think outside the box to get crafty so I decided we would use the M&Ms to paint with.  What?  Yep!  We were going to use the M&Ms to create watercolors and then paint our gift wrapping.

It really was totally simple and to say the kids loved it was a complete understatement!

Unique Gift Wrapping: Watercolor M&M Painting

Sort the M&Ms by color and place 20-25 M&Ms of each color into glass containers.

Add a small amount of water, not completely covering the M&Ms as they will settle. After about 10 minutes, stir each color.  Allow it to continue to sit another 10-15 minutes, stir again.

Addie and Austin both love to paint so Addie jumped at the chance to paint with M&Ms.  Be sure to use a different brush in each jar so you will keep each color bright & vibrant.

Try to cover as much of the paper as possible and then allow to dry completely. I wrapped my package with the painted paper.

Then I cut coordinating pieces of ribbon that varied in widths and using a hot glue gun attached them to the package.

I made my bows by using 8 small circles.  You can use a hand punch to keep them all uniform.  (I actually used a circle cutter that I have for scrapbooking.) One circle is for the back of the flower to adhere each piece.  Gently fold in two edges of each of the seven pieces to create the petals. Attach each petal using a small amount of glue.

Continue with all seven petals.  If you wish you can glue each petal down or leave them open. Glue an M&M of your choice in the center.

Attach your flower to your ribbon on the package and you are all ready to gift your beautiful piece of art!

  1. I love this idea! I pinned this to do with my kiddos! Such a neat idea – I never would have thought of it! Did you use a specific type of paper? The kids have to wrap presents that they got for their grandparents at church so this would be perfect for them to make their own wrapping paper to wrap their gifts!

    1. We used white construction paper for it to be a bit thicker but also just used white copy paper and it turned out good also!

      1. Painting with M&Ms …I have been doing this for about 2 years. I do a pen/ink drawing then wash in color from M&Ms.

Have given one workshop, one demo and will do another demo to a group in two weeks. And yes……I do eat the washed out M&M’s when I am done painting. I have sold several M&M paintings. People love them

BTW….Have you heard about the quality control inspector who got fired ….he was tossing away all the W’s

  2. How creative. I never thought of using m&m’s to paint with. I am not sure we could resist eating them to get to that part but I sure do love the idea. I love the pixel art too.

  3. Wow! That certainly was creative. The wrapping paper really turned out beautiful and it looks like their was lots of fun while doing this project. I love the pixel art too. So colorful. But I have to tell you, I would rather eat the M&Ms. 😉

  4. What a clever idea. I like how it is safe and children do not need to worry about eating the paint. I think this is also great for really young children who are fist learning to pain.
