Who Starts a Business?

Now more than ever with the roller coaster of an economy we deal with, individuals are looking outside the box for their sources of income.  While I had a great job and successful career, I wanted to be a full-time stay-at-home mom.  That wasn’t possible without another income source.  I worked several part-time jobs and balanced my home life somewhat successfully, but I longed for something else.

For some Mamas like myself, we turn something we enjoy doing that may have at one time been a hobby into a business.  For others, they decide to venture out and start a business.  While in years past this may have been something an average person would not have thought about doing, the statistics show that more people plan to start their own businesses in the near future.

Who is looking to start a business?

Of 1,000 people surveyed, here are some of the results:

  • 56% are planning on opening or starting a business in the next 12-18 months. (Either alone or with a partner.)
  • 25% are females looking to start their own business.
  • 56% looking to start a business are planning on having a business partner.
  • 31% of the people looking to start a business are planning on going into business with a spouse or domestic partner. (That’s roughly 10% of all respondents.)
  • 30% of respondents looking to start a business are going into business with a friend and 26% are going into business with a colleague.
  • Females are more likely to go into business with a spouse or domestic partner than males.

While some consider going into business with their spouses a martial death trap, statics are showing that more spouses are starting family businesses together as a solution to their financial needs.

Have you ever considered stepping outside the box and starting your own business?

  1. Interesting stats! I intend on starting a non-profit in the future and hubby just recently shared his dream of going to culinary school and wanting to open his own restaurant! We definitely fall into these stats!
